SSA Forrest Guthrie passed away on April 25, 2016 in his sleep. Forest was on the JFK president elect detail.

On the morning of Nov. 7, 1960, the Secret Service’s detail that would begin guarding John F. Kennedy if he was declared winner of the previous day’s presidential election got word that experts felt Kennedy would take a close victory (at the time, the Secret Service did not guard presidential candidates unless they were already president or vice-president).

So the agents left their motel in Hyannis Port on Cape Cod and headed for the Kennedy compound where they would begin guarding the president-elect and his family. Assigned the job of driving the new fully-equipped white Lincoln that would become the presidential car was Forrest Guthrie, an Alabama native who had spent eight years in the Secret Service, the last three at the White House.

Forrest went on to serve seven U.S. Presidents (Forrest Guthrie center of photo with JFK)
